About Things
I came into this life in La Mesa, California, in 1979. My life has been an extended exploration into my own fluid sense of identity and belonging. Bi-ethnic, tri-cutural, and multi-racial, I have existed on the boundaries of many groups of people though I rarely fit in completely with any of them. This experience has fundamentally shaped my photography and prompted me to explore liminal spaces and undefined landscapes as well as the diverse groups of people I encounter. Each photograph becomes a kind of self-portrait and a journal of my deepening understanding of myself.
Photography has been a part of my life since childhood when I picked up my first cheap 110 format camera. In the following years my efforts have taken me into the portrait studio, across the globe as a travel photographer, and finally back to my neighborhood to examine the ordinary spaces that I call home. In all my attempts I have striven to create a sense of the beauty and realness of ordinary places and people. If, when looking at my photographs, you can smell the grass, feel the heat, and hear the water, then I will have achieved some measure of success.
I am presently located in Houston, Texas, with my wife, son, and two dogs. A second generation Vaishnava Hindu, I am active in my local Hindu community. In addition to my fine art photography I am an event and portrait photographer in the greater Houston area.
